New High-Speed Rail Rescue Vehicle Joins Newport Fire Station
A brand-new multi-agency emergency vehicle rolled into Maindee fire station, Newport, yesterday (12 Nov), promising blazing-fast responses on the railway. The 7.25-tonne Mitsubishi Canter can switch between road and rail in a flash, helping emergency crews tackle incidents on tracks quicker than ever – potentially saving lives.
Cutting-Edge Design from Network Rail and Partners
Network Rail teamed up with South Wales Fire and Rescue, Avon and Somerset Fire, Welsh Ambulance, and Southern Western Ambulance services to create this bespoke beast. Local firm GOS Tool & Engineering, based in Blaenavon, crafted the vehicle to the exact needs of emergency services.
Robyn MacNamara, Network Rail’s Project Manager, said,
“The safety of our passengers is our priority and these vehicles will allow for a faster and more effective multi-agency emergency response.”
She adds: “The Severn Tunnel stretches four-and-a-half miles, so rapid emergency access is crucial. This vehicle has specialist provisions for both firefighters and ambulance crews.”
Training Underway Before Full Deployment
Crews will undergo a training and transition period before the vehicle goes fully operational, ensuring they’re ready to handle emergencies swiftly and efficiently on the rails.
Boosting Emergency Response Across Wales and England
Maindee Station Commander Gareth Evans praised the new addition:
“I’m absolutely delighted to welcome this fantastic vehicle. It means quicker response times, flexible multi-agency support, and access to hard-to-reach rail locations.”
Welsh Ambulance’s Clare Langshaw, involved in the vehicle’s design, said:
“This unique vehicle will make it easier and faster to reach patients on the rail network, improving our chances to save lives.”
Network Rail plans to deliver another identical vehicle to Avon and Somerset Fire and Rescue later this month, beefing up emergency readiness both sides of the border in the Severn Tunnel region.
