Litterbugs Nabbed Dumping Rubbish by M6 Motorway
Three men were caught red-handed dumping bags of rubbish on a grass verge next to the M6 last Sunday, March 28. Sharp-eyed Highways England CCTV operators spotted the culprits in the act and alerted police.
Caught on Camera and Pulled Over
Officers from the Central Motorway Policing Group (CMPG) stopped the men about four miles from the dump site. Images shared on Twitter show the trio having to put their rubbish back into bags and clear the mess.
“An eagle-eyed @HighwaysWMIDS officer monitoring CCTV spotted the occupants of a Passat dumping rubbish in an emergency refuge area,” CMPG tweeted. “We intercepted the vehicle between M6 J14 and J15 and escorted them back to clear their rubbish. Details passed to @EnvAgency.”
Dangerous Dumping Could Have Risked Lives
This careless act wasn’t just bad for the environment. The rubbish posed a serious hazard—imagine if a gust of wind blew the trash onto the motorway, right into the path of speeding motorcyclists or drivers.
James Hawkes, Highways England’s Network Operations Manager for the Midlands, slammed the offenders:
“We spotted this blatant and reckless abuse of one of our designated emergency areas on our CCTV system and quickly passed it to the police. Emergency areas are there for just that, an emergency.”
Authorities vow to keep working closely to crackdown on such dangerous littering along UK roads.
