Burglar Jailed for Preying on Vulnerable Victims
A 34-year-old woman has been locked up for 18 months after targeting two vulnerable victims in a shocking burglary spree.
Maria Rowland’s Sneaky Crimes
Maria Rowland, formerly of Weedon, admitted breaking into a disabled man’s home on October 23, 2020, while his wife was out walking the dog. She swiped a handbag, then used one of the stolen bank cards to withdraw cash from an ATM and buy scratch cards nearby.
Less than a month later, on November 18, Rowland rang the doorbell of a 92-year-old woman living in sheltered housing in Daventry. She asked to use the bathroom, claiming the communal one was busy. Once inside, Rowland snatched a purse and £255 in cash before fleeing.
Police Crack Down on Burglars
Northamptonshire Police’s Burglary Team West tracked down Rowland, leading to her arrest and charges. She pleaded guilty at Northampton Crown Court this week and was sentenced to 18 months behind bars.
“Maria Rowland preyed on vulnerable people,” said Detective Sergeant Terry Rush. “I’m glad she pleaded guilty so her victims avoided the trauma of a trial. I hope she reflects on her actions and turns her life around after prison.”
“Burglary is a top priority for Northamptonshire Police. We have zero tolerance for burglars – you’re not welcome here, and we will catch you.”
