Medway Task Force Cracks Down on Crime and Boosts Community Spirit
The Medway Task Force has been busy protecting vulnerable residents and pumping up neighbourhood pride. This powerhouse team combines Kent Police, Medway Council, Kent Fire and Rescue, and other key partners to make Medway safer and cleaner.
Over 1,000 Crime Prevention Kits Handed Out
Since launching back in February 2020, the Task Force has handed out more than 1,000 crime prevention products including property marking kits, door chains, and shed alarms. Kent Police officers have knocked on the doors of over 1,300 homes, offering vital advice and protective gear.
Superintendent Rob Marsh, Kent Police’s Deputy Divisional Commander for North Kent, said: “Our goal has always been more than just catching crooks. Preventing crime and empowering residents is key. The community engagement we’ve achieved shows we’re on the right path.”
High Street Gets a Security Makeover
Targeted crime prevention around Medway’s High Street kicked off thanks to a £250,000 Home Office ‘Safer Streets’ grant, secured by Kent Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Scott.

- About 20 property-marking warning signs placed on lampposts
- Regular police patrols and engagement with locals
Cleaning Up and Cracking Down on Fly-Tipping
Medway Council crews have hauled away 45 tonnes of waste, much of it dumped illegally. Regular patrols help keep streets trash-free, while enforcement actions target persistent offenders. This crackdown has fueled a 66% jump in local recycling rates.
Safety Checks and School Sessions
Kent Fire and Rescue have carried out home safety visits. Meanwhile, 1,300 Year 6 pupils took part in virtual “Safety in Action” workshops covering internet, fire, water, and road safety. Partners included the RNLI, HM Coastguard, and Crimestoppers.
Leaders Praise Task Force Success
Police and Crime Commissioner Matthew Scott hailed the initiative as a “huge success” with plans for similar projects in Ramsgate and Canterbury.
Scott said: “This project truly changes lives. Thanks to everyone involved for making such a difference.”
Medway Council’s Cllr Howard Doe added: “Residents love where they live thanks to this partnership. We’re committed to keeping Medway safe and welcoming.”
