Police Pay Crisis: Officers Struggle to Feed Families as Salaries Plummet
Chief Constable Sounds Alarm
“You can’t taser the gas bill or handcuff the family food shop,” says the chief constable, highlighting the harsh reality facing his officers. Police families are struggling to make ends meet, with some officers finding it impossible to afford basics like heating and food.
Officers Leaving For Better Pay
A father-to-be and serving officer recently quit the force after realising his police salary couldn’t cover his bills. He’s now working as a scaffolder, earning a hefty £250 a day — far above his police pay.
Salaries Lag Behind Inflation
- Police salaries have fallen 17% behind since 2000, according to Police Federation data.
- Between 2000 and 2022, pay lost nearly 20% against inflation.
- Police pay growth has been less than half the average UK worker’s.
- If trends continue, salaries will drop another 4% by 2027.
Foodbanks Inside Police Stations
Chief constable Mr Harrington shared images of a foodbank set up at a county police station. Officers who risk their lives daily are forced to rely on colleagues for a hot meal after a shift.
“We are a team, and I’m proud of that. But it breaks my heart that those who catch the worst criminals have to depend on mates just to get through the day,” said Mr Harrington.
The police benevolent fund has handed out nearly a quarter of a million pounds in aid over the last two years to support struggling officers.
