Dad Jailed for Life After Toddler Son Dies 18 Years Post-Smothering Attack

Toddler’s Tragic Death: Dad Jailed for Life After 18 Years

A man who smothered his toddler son, leaving the boy brain damaged for life, has been sentenced to life behind bars – 18 years after the child died as an adult.

Guilty Verdict at Leeds Crown Court

Alan Bird was convicted of murder at Leeds Crown Court last week. The 48-year-old from Batley was given life imprisonment with a minimum of eight years before parole. The jury unanimously ruled Bird’s violent act caused his son’s death.

From Assault to Murder: A Harrowing Case

  • In 2001, Bird suffocated his 2-year-old son Lewis Turner at their Dewsbury home, leaving him with permanent brain injuries.
  • Bird pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm and child cruelty. He got eight years but served only five.
  • Lewis was later adopted and lived with his new family, but remained severely disabled.
  • Lewis died in July 2019, aged 19, from an infection caused by a feeding tube.
  • Investigators linked the feeding tube directly to Bird’s attack. This led to the murder charge.

Justice After Years of Suffering

“Lewis’s quality of life was catastrophically reduced by the extensive disabilities caused to him by his father,” said Detective Inspector James Entwistle.

“This is a tragic case where a child’s life was stolen by the parent who should have protected him.”

Lewis’s adoptive family said: “We are grateful for the happy times we shared with Lewis despite his injuries. He brought us joy, laughter and love. Lewis will always be with us.”

The devastating case highlights the long road to justice for abuse victims and the lasting consequences of parental cruelty.
