RNLI Lifeguard Recruitment Kicks Off for Summer Safety

The RNLI has launched its search for this season’s lifeguard team, ready to keep East Sussex beaches safe and sound. These lifesavers don’t just rescue swimmers—they offer crucial first aid and safety tips, helping visitors enjoy the seaside and get home unharmed.

Last Summer’s Heroics: 359 Rescues and Counting

In 2022, RNLI lifeguards handled 359 emergencies, assisting just as many people. From saving children drifting out on inflatables to rescuing paddleboarders caught in fierce currents, their lifesaving skills were in constant demand.

“Our lifeguards helped swimmers caught by strong currents, came to the rescue of paddleboarders, and delivered vital first aid across the beaches,” said RNLI spokespeople.

Join the Team: Top Training and Flexible Work

New recruits get world-class training, competitive pay, and flexible hours. Lifeguards also gain valuable career skills in leadership, teamwork, and confidence.

“Working as a lifeguard is rewarding and helps build skills for any career,” said Hugh Richardson, RNLI Lead Lifeguard Supervisor for East Sussex. “You make a huge difference by preventing life-threatening incidents. We want people ready to learn and act when it counts.”

Interviews start in March, with training from April through July. Training covers rescue boards, tubes, and a three-day casualty care course. You don’t need qualifications to apply—the RNLI will help you get certified.

Who Can Apply? Over 16 and Fit

Ed Stevens, RNLI Regional Lifeguard Lead, says the role suits a wide range of ages—from teens to lifesavers in their 70s.

“If you’re over 16 and fit, there could be a spot for you. Lifeguarding offers great career progression and is a brilliant summer job or starting point for a career in lifesaving,” said Stevens.

Patrols run from 7 April to 1 October 2023.

Get Qualified

The RNLI seeks candidates with a National Vocational Beach Lifeguard Qualification (NVBLQ), ILS Beach/Surf Lifeguard award, or equivalent. No qualifications? No problem. Courses are available — 123.
