Brighton Man Jailed for Brutal Four-Year Abuse Spree

Shaun Kent, 31, from Brighton, has been slammed with a 32-month prison sentence for terrorising his ex-partner Darcy with four years of relentless domestic abuse and controlling behaviour. The Lewes Crown Court heard how the bricklayer from Sandhurst Road took charge of nearly every part of Darcy’s life, unleashing both physical and psychological torment.

Control, Violence, and Haunting Threats

Kent’s control was suffocating. He deleted Darcy’s social media accounts and stalked her at social events unannounced. His violent outbursts left deep scars—literally—targeting her surgery wounds and inflicting lasting damage. He isolated her from family and friends, bombarding her with texts and calls when she tried to escape his grip.

Darcy told the court: “Kent completely destroyed my self-worth. He tore my family apart, cut me off from my friends, and left me unemployed and alone.”

She added: “He is, was, and forever shall be a woman beater and a monster of a human being. I am a survivor of your abuse.”

Bail-Breaking, Lies, and Court Drama

Arrested in February 2019, Kent brazenly breached his bail by impersonating a male friend of Darcy’s to convince her to drop charges. When Darcy turned up to meet the “friend,” she found Kent waiting in his car. Charged with coercive control, actual bodily harm, witness intimidation, sexual assault, and assault by beating, he pleaded guilty to all except sexual assault— which remains on file.

Justice Served—But The Scars Remain

The judge sentenced Kent to 32 months behind bars and slapped on a restraining order. Darcy’s courage in facing her abuser in court was praised by Sussex Police Investigations Supervisor Sharon Rintoul:

“Darcy’s bravery in supporting this prosecution and confronting her abuser is remarkable. Sussex Police remain committed to fighting violence against women and girls, bringing offenders like Kent to justice and protecting victims.”

Despite the pain, Darcy vows to move on: “I may carry the memory, but I am stronger than the abuse.”
