Top Clwyd Cadets Honoured by King’s Representative
Ten outstanding individuals, including eight young cadets from across Clwyd, have been recognised by the King’s representative for the county. The prestigious ceremony crowned three cadets as Lord-Lieutenant cadets for 2023.
Meet the New Lord-Lieutenant Cadets
The stars of the show were Cadet Sergeant Owen Brumby from St Brigid’s School Combined Cadet Force, Cadet Corporal Alun Hughes, and Cadet Flight Sergeant Lewis Hughes, both from No 2 Welsh Wing RAF Air Cadets. They received their appointments at a grand event held at Hightown Barracks, Wrexham, on 30 March.
Their year-long role includes representing the Lord-Lieutenant at official occasions like Remembrance events, Royal visits, and military parades.
Cadet Heroes with Big Dreams
- Owen Brumby, from Rhyl, was second in command of the elite Cambrian Patrol team. He loves adventurous training and aims to become an aerospace or automobile engineer.
- Alun Hughes, from Dyserth and a Llandrillo College student, leads confidently as corporal at 2193 (Prestatyn) Squadron, excelling in drill and team challenges.
- Lewis Hughes, from Wrexham and attending Coleg Cambria, has been a role model at 1251 (Berwyn) Squadron since 2017. He dreams of joining the RAF as a pilot, flying multi-engine aircraft.
Honouring Past Cadet Champions and Adult Volunteers
The new cadets follow in the footsteps of last year’s top performers like Cadet Sergeant Isabella Jones and Cadet Sergeant Ciara Venables of the Clwyd and Gwynedd Army Cadet Force. Others honoured in 2022 included Maddie Bunn, Bethan Shutt, and Kristian Harrison.
Two adults also earned top praise: Deborah Restall of Connah’s Quay Sea Cadet Corps and Chief Petty Officer Keith McDermott of Rhyl Sea Cadet Corps received the Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Merit for outstanding service.
Cadets Building Skills and Serving Communities
Nearly 5,000 cadets across Wales develop skills and qualifications by supporting local charities and joining practical activities. Their training is powered by 1,500 dedicated volunteer instructors who commit their evenings and weekends.
The awards were organised by the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association (RFCA) for Wales, a century-old organisation supporting the Armed Forces.
