Smoke and Explosions Over Kremlin Spark Drone Attack Claims
Volodymyr Zelensky, visiting Finland, stressed Ukraine’s mission: defending its own land—not targeting Putin or Moscow.
Drone Drama Unfolds Above Kremlin
Unverified footage showed smoke billowing above the Kremlin early Wednesday, with a small explosion near the Senate building. Russia’s presidency said two drones were disabled by electronic radar, insisting Putin was not at the site during the incident.
The Kremlin branded it “a planned terrorist act and assassination attempt” on Putin, vowing retaliation “when and where necessary.” But Ukraine slammed the claims, calling them a cover for Russia’s massive assaults on Ukrainian soil. The US warned to treat Russian allegations with caution.
Security and Air Defence Under Spotlight
The attack raises serious questions about Putin’s famously tight security. Moscow rooftops have recently been dotted with anti-aircraft systems amid fears of Ukrainian or sympathiser air raids on key targets.
What’s Next? Tough Retaliation or Escalation?
Russian generals warn of harsh responses to attacks on their soil. Yet, it’s unclear if Moscow can launch significant counterstrikes or if this incident will spark a bigger warfront in Ukraine.
