MoD Plans Big 80th Normandy Landings Tribute
The Ministry of Defence is gearing up to mark the 80th anniversary of the legendary Normandy Landings on 6 June 2024. Teaming up with veterans’ charities and memorial groups, the MoD is putting D-Day veterans centre stage in the official commemorations.
Calling All Normandy Veterans – This One’s for You
Veterans who stormed the beaches in 1944 are urged to register their interest through the Royal British Legion. This rare chance lets those heroes take a starring role in tribute events as communities unite to honour the brave souls who paid the ultimate price.
Remembering D-Day: The Turning Point of WWII
On 6 June 1944, British, American and Allied forces launched a massive joint assault on Nazi-occupied France. This fierce battle opened the door to liberating northwest Europe from Nazi rule, culminating in Allied victory a year later.
For the first time ever, the British Normandy Memorial at Ver-sur-Mer will host the main 80th anniversary ceremonies. Part-funded by the UK government, this iconic site was unveiled by French President Macron and former PM Theresa May at the 75th anniversary in 2019.
More Ways to Respect Our Fallen Heroes
- Commemorations will also take place at Bayeux War Cemetery, resting place to 4,144 British and Commonwealth troops lost in the landings.
- The MoD will support the traditional anniversary service at Bayeux Cathedral to maintain the occasion’s solemnity.
Armed Forces personnel will lead these key tributes, joined by veterans and special guests recalling the bravery that shaped Europe’s future.
A Nation United in Remembrance
The events will unite the UK and Allies in remembering our shared history and renewing our commitment to peace and security. With broadcasts and nationwide tributes, everyone will get a chance to salute the D-Day heroes.
More details on these historic events are set to be announced soon. Make sure you don’t miss out on paying tribute to the heroes of Normandy 80 years on.
