Speeding Scoundrel Jailed for Dodging Tickets with Fake Plates
Rory Keen, 47, from Southampton’s Spring Road, has been locked up for trying to pervert the course of justice to dodge speeding fines.
Mercedes Caught Zooming on M27 Four Times
Keen’s black Mercedes CLA 45 was clocked speeding on four separate occasions, according to court records:
- Nov 16, 2021 – 65mph in a temporary 50mph zone eastbound on the M27 near Swanwick.
- Nov 19, 2021 – 64mph again in the same 50mph zone on the M27 eastbound near Swanwick.
- Sep 17, 2022 – 87mph in a 70mph zone westbound on the M27 near Fareham.
- Oct 7, 2022 – A whopping 103mph in a 70mph zone eastbound on the M27 near West End.
Faked Number Plates and Fancy Tech Didn’t Save Him
In a desperate bid to escape justice, Keen swapped his car’s number plates and sent police a photo claiming his original plates were cloned. But cops were not fooled.
Using built-in GPS data from the car, mobile phone cell site tracking, and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, officers proved Keen was behind the wheel every time.
Guilty Plea Lands 12 Months Behind Bars
Keen admitted perverting the course of justice and was sentenced at Southampton Crown Court on March 1, 2024. He was handed a 12-month prison term and a six-month driving ban on release.
“This case is a stark reminder that attempts to cheat the system will not pay,” said a law enforcement spokesperson. “Advanced tech and relentless policing will always catch out those who try.”
The message is clear: speed and smart crime avoidance just don’t mix in today’s policing landscape.
