Tragic stabbing in Bradford city centre
Shoppers were stunned on Saturday when 27-year-old Kulsuma Akter was fatally stabbed in Bradford city centre. She was out with her five-month-old son when the brutal attack happened. Thankfully, the baby escaped unhurt. West Yorkshire Police have launched a massive manhunt to find 25-year-old Habibur Masum, who is suspected of the murder.
Suspect was on bail despite previous threats
Masum, already on bail for assaulting and threatening to kill Akter, had been conditionally released by Manchester Magistrates’ Court. His bail banned him from contacting Akter or visiting certain addresses. The charges dating back to late November included threatening to kill and assaulting Akter in Manchester.
The horrifying attack in Bradford’s Westgate area left Akter with multiple stab wounds. She later died in hospital, sparking anger over the decision to free Masum on bail ahead of the killing.
Police launch raids and appeal for sightings
Assistant Chief Constable Damien Miller revealed Masum is described as a slim Asian male, last spotted on CCTV boarding a bus near Bradford Moor Park. Police have since raided homes in Burnley, Oldham, and Chester, arresting a 23-year-old on suspicion of assisting an offender.
Authorities recovered the murder weapon from the scene and warned the public not to approach Masum if spotted. Instead, they urge immediate calls to 999. Both West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester Police have referred their handling of the case to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
Nation in shock as manhunt intensifies
The Prime Minister and Home Office extended condolences to Akter’s family and called for public cooperation in the ongoing investigation. Police remain on high alert in Bradford amid growing calls for justice for the young mother.
Anyone with information is urged to contact police immediately. The hunt for Habibur Masum continues as the community reels from this tragic loss.
