80 Migrants Saved After English Channel Ordeal
Mass Rescue Off Kent Coast
Around 80 migrants, including at least three children, were rescued after their boat hit trouble crossing the English Channel. The drama unfolded roughly 10 miles off the Kent coast on Thursday morning.
Dover and Walmer lifeboats sprang into action alongside Border Force vessels. French ships and Coastguard helicopters also joined the massive rescue effort, led by UK authorities.
No Fatalities Reported
The operation involved two Border Force boats, two lifeboats, two French vessels, and two Coastguard helicopters. Teams scoured the area, and thankfully, no deaths have been reported.
The boat is believed to have entered UK waters after being tracked by a French warship, before running into difficulties.
Migrants Expected Back in Dover
Some migrants may have drifted back into French waters during the rescue. Those saved by UK lifeboats are expected to be brought ashore in Dover.
An HM Coastguard spokeswoman confirmed they coordinated the response to this Channel incident.
Channel Crossings Spike Amid Election Tensions
This rescue follows Home Office data revealing over 7,500 migrants arrived in the UK via small boats in the first four months of 2024 — a record high. In 2023, 29,437 migrant arrivals were recorded, down a third from the previous year.
The treacherous English Channel remains a hotspot for risky crossings, stirring political debate ahead of the July 4th UK polls.
