Drivers Face £1,000 Fines for Scrapping Car Mistakes

Motorists are being slammed with a stark warning about potential £1,000 fines from the DVLA if they botch the process of scrapping their cars. With the average payout for scrapped vehicles at around £250 in May, drivers need to follow the rules to avoid costly penalties.

Follow the Rules or Pay Up

The British Metals Recycling Association (BMRA) has stressed the importance of using an Authorised Treatment Facility (ATF) when scrapping a vehicle. These centres issue a Certificate of Destruction via the DVLA, proving the vehicle was properly depolluted or destroyed.

Drivers must hand over their vehicle’s V5C log book to the ATF, but keep the yellow section titled “sell, transfer or part-exchange your vehicle to the motor trade.” They must also formally notify the DVLA that the vehicle has been scrapped at an ATF.

Expert Advice from the BMRA

James Kelly, CEO of BMRA, said: “As the voice of the UK metals recycling industry, we’re proud to back responsible car recycling. It’s vital we keep pushing for better regulations and awareness to ensure cars, including electric ones, are recycled safely. This helps protect our environment and supports the drive to net-zero.”

Top Tips to Avoid Trouble

  • You can remove parts from your vehicle before scrapping it to repair another vehicle you own.
  • Make sure removal doesn’t pollute the environment by preventing oils and fluids from leaking into soil or drains.
  • Always use an authorised treatment facility to get your Certificate of Destruction.
  • Remember to inform the DVLA once your car is scrapped to avoid fines.

Further DVLA Warnings UK Drivers Should Know

  • Martin Lewis warns millions about potential fines on driving licences.
  • DVLA issues alerts to drivers who passed their test before 2014.
  • Watch out for warnings over expired driving licences.

Motorists are urged to take these rules seriously. Proper car recycling not only prevents fines but also helps protect the environment and conserve natural resources. Don’t risk a hefty bill – scrap your car the right way.
