Disaster on the A421: Flooding Shuts Road After Record Rainfall
The A421 in Bedfordshire is completely shut in both directions following relentless flooding from record-breaking rainfall. National Highways is fighting around the clock, pumping millions of litres of water off the flooded stretch near Marston Moretaine.
Millions of Litres Pumped from the Flooded Road
Since floodwaters surged on 22 September, crews have hauled away over 24 million litres of water—equivalent to TEN Olympic-sized swimming pools. Specialist high-volume pumps, running non-stop since last week, are now shifting five million litres a day. Despite this herculean effort, the stretch from the A6 at Bedford to M1 junction 13 won’t reopen for several days as teams battle lingering floodwater and assess road damage.
Record Rain Dumps Month’s Worth of Rain in Just 48 Hours
Rainfall overwhelmed the area, flooding a local pumping station and sending water depths up to eight feet at the peak. A fleet of 25 tankers has been deployed nonstop, tackling an estimated 60 million litres of standing water.
Martin Fellows, Regional Director for National Highways East of England, said: “We are taking every possible measure to tackle this unprecedented situation and get the roads open as soon as possible. However, the record rainfall has made this a challenging operation, and it may take several more days to resolve the issue safely.”
Coordinated Flood Response and Safety Warnings
National Highways and Bedfordshire Local Resilience Forum—a coalition of local authorities, emergency services, and the Environment Agency—are leading the flood response. Authorities urge the public to steer clear of the area to let teams work efficiently and safely.
Mr Fellows added: “I understand people are curious and want to visit the area, but I kindly request that the public stay away from the site so our work can progress quickly.”
What’s Next? Road Repairs and Diversion Routes
Once floodwaters are drained, investigations will check for road damage before repairs can begin. Until then, drivers must follow these diversions:
- Northbound: From M1 J13, take Bedford Road north through Brogborough and Marston Moretaine to join A6/A421 at Marsh Leys.
- Southbound: Exit A421 at Marsh Leys, head south on Woburn Road towards Wootton, and continue to M1 J13.
Motorists are urged to avoid the flood-hit zone and stick to official diversion routes.
