Off-Duty Officer Intervenes in Violent Restaurant Assault in Horsham

A 36-year-old woman from Brighton has been arrested after an incident at a popular restaurant in Horsham left two staff members injured.

Incident Overview

The disturbance occurred at Smith and Western on East Street around 7:48 pm on Friday, November 15. Witnesses reported seeing a woman in distress enter the restaurant and assault two employees with a glass.

A male employee sustained injuries to his arm and face, while a female employee suffered facial injuries. Both were taken to the hospital for treatment.

Off-Duty Officer Takes Action

The attack was witnessed by an off-duty police officer dining with her family at the time. The officer quickly intervened, detaining the suspect and providing first aid until on-duty units arrived.

Arrest and Investigation

The suspect was arrested on suspicion of two counts of causing grievous bodily harm and remains in custody as investigations continue.

*“This was a hugely distressing incident witnessed by numerous people, including families with young children. I’d like to reassure the community that a suspect is in custody as we actively investigate the full circumstances.

“I’d also like to commend the actions of the off-duty officer, who detained the suspect and helped administer first aid until further units arrived on the scene. Officers are never truly off duty in their communities, and in this instance, the officer went towards danger without a second thought.”*
