A heartbroken family have paid tribute to a “much-loved” grandmother who was found dead at a home in Carlisle as police continue a murder investigation. Susan Watson, 61, was found dead at a property in Carlisle, Cumbria, on Sunday, August 2. A man in his 60s was arrested in connection with the investigation and has since been released on bail while police enquiries continue. Detectives are working to establish the full circumstances surrounding Susan’s death. Police have previously urged members of the public to “refrain from speculation whilst the investigation is ongoing”.
Family pay heartbreaking tribute to Susan
Susan’s devastated family described her as a much-loved sister, mother, grandmother and friend who dedicated much of her life to helping other people. In an emotional tribute, they said: “Family meant everything to her, and she was never happier than when she had the people she loved around her. “She absolutely adored being a Grandma and treasured every moment she spent with her grandchildren. “Helping people was simply who Susan was. She always put other people before herself and was the first to offer a helping hand, whether it was family, friends, neighbours or complete strangers. “She never expected anything in return and never wanted recognition. She just believed that if someone needed help, you helped them.”
‘Looking after other people came naturally to her’
Susan was a committed volunteer with the Samaritans and dedicated countless evenings to providing support to people who needed someone to talk to at Carlisle railway station. She also volunteered at the charity’s shop and was known for her compassion and willingness to listen to people experiencing difficult times. Susan worked as a foot practitioner in Carlisle and developed lasting friendships with many of the people she treated. Her family said: “Looking after other people came naturally to her. “She often went far beyond what anyone would expect, picking up shopping for people who couldn’t get out, checking in on those who were struggling, and making sure nobody felt alone or forgotten. “If someone was going through a difficult time, she would open her home and do whatever she could to help.” Her generosity also extended to Christmas, with her family saying that if somebody had nowhere else to go, “there was always a place at her table”.
Murder investigation continues
Detectives continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the 61-year-old’s death. The man in his 60s who was arrested in connection with the investigation has been released on police bail while enquiries continue. Police have not announced any charges.
