M20 Junction 1 Closure Scrapped Over Storm Threat
A weekend shutdown of the M20 motorway at Junction 1 has been canned amid fierce storm warnings. The plan to install a 350-metre central reservation safety barrier has been put on ice due to high winds making the job too risky.
Stormy Weather Forces Cancellation
The closure was set from 10pm on Friday, 6 December, until 5:30am on Monday, 9 December. It involved lifting heavy barrier sections into place — but the forecasted gale-force winds made the operation unsafe.
Traffic was due to divert via exit and entry slip roads, with tweaks to signals at the nearby Swanley Interchange to keep traffic moving smoothly.
National Highways Issues Safety Warning
Amelia Yeodal, Programme Development Manager at National Highways, said:
“Our work here will improve safety for those using this part of the M20. We plan carefully to cut disruption, but strong winds pose a major risk to lifting operations required for this project.”
“We appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience and will update on new dates as soon as we can.”
Safety Upgrade on Hold, But Not Forgotten
The new central reservation barrier is designed to boost safety and slash maintenance needs over the long haul. Once finished, drivers can expect a safer stretch of motorway.
National Highways promises to keep the public informed about when the work will be rescheduled. In the meantime, drivers should stay alert for weather and traffic updates as storms batter the region this weekend.
