New Series Could Explore Trixie Franklin’s Early Years

A Call the Midwife spin-off may be in the works as creator Heidi Thomas revealed the beloved BBC period drama could “take a break at some point.”

Speaking about the show’s future, Thomas explained:

“Those of us who are most invested with the show, cast and producers alike, who have been there since the beginning, it is our lives.

I don’t believe Call The Midwife will ever end. But I do think we might take a break at some point.”

While not confirming specific details, Thomas hinted at possible opportunities to “expand” the Call The Midwife world, which could lead to a spin-off series.

Prequel Series Exploring Trixie Franklin’s Youth?

According to The Sun, a potential first spin-off could focus on the “early years” of fan-favourite Trixie Franklin, currently played by Helen George.

The prequel series would take viewers back to the 1950s, shifting from the current storyline set in the 1970s, and explore Trixie’s start in her career as a midwife.

A TV insider revealed:

“Trixie is an obvious choice of subject because she is one of the wilder characters at Nonnatus House and therefore has the potential for a more interesting back story.

When we were introduced to her in series one in 2012, she was in her early twenties and was already very worldly. So there is much to take a deep dive into.”

If given the green light, the spin-off would see a new actress take on the role of a teenage or early-20s Trixie, portraying her journey into midwifery.

Show’s Future and BBC Response

Call the Midwife has been one of the BBC’s most successful dramas, attracting millions of viewers since its 2012 debut.

With series 14 wrapping up on Sunday, March 2, fans are eager to see what’s next.

BBC bosses have yet to confirm any spin-off plans, but with the show remaining one of the broadcaster’s top-rated programmes, it seems a future expansion is highly likely.

For now, fans will have to wait for official updates, but the idea of a Trixie-centred prequel could bring a fresh perspective to the Call the Midwife universe.
