Questions are being raised about the operation of unlicensed rickshaws in London after reports surfaced that they are now being booked through an app.
Questions have been directed at Transport for London (TfL) and TfL’s Taxi and Private Hire (TfLTPH) accused the authority of allowing unregulated rickshaws to operate across the capital. The post, which included the hashtag #LawlessLondon, expressed frustration over the apparent lack of enforcement, stating:
“Why are you allowing unlicensed, unregulated rickshaws to operate in your jurisdiction and operate via an app?”
Public Safety and Regulation Concerns
Rickshaws have long been a contentious issue in London, with critics arguing that the industry lacks proper regulation, leading to concerns about passenger safety, pricing, and road use compliance. Unlike licensed taxis and private hire vehicles, rickshaws are not required to meet the same safety and insurance standards.
TfL has previously attempted to clamp down on rickshaw operations, but enforcement has proven difficult due to legal loopholes that allow them to operate as “pedicabs” under current road traffic laws. The rise of an app-based booking system raises further concerns about how these services are being monitored and whether they are complying with regulations.
TfL Yet to Respond
At the time of reporting, TfL has not issued a statement addressing the claim that rickshaws are now operating through an app. However, calls for stricter enforcement and potential legal action against unlicensed operators are growing.
