Army Joins Fight as New HGV Covid Testing Centres Open Nationwide
Good news for haulage firms! Ten fresh HGV testing centres have launched across the UK, with another ten set to open tomorrow. The government is also backing businesses to set up their own testing spots — kits are free. The Army’s stepping in to lend a hand and keep goods moving smoothly through Kent and beyond.
Fast-Track Border Crossing for Tested Drivers
HGVs approaching Dover and the Eurotunnel will be fast-tracked past queues — but only if drivers test negative before arriving in Kent. Hauliers must also ensure they have the correct paperwork, including the crucial Kent Access Permits, to avoid costly delays when crossing the Channel.
Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said:
“Thanks to the heroic efforts of military and civilian personnel over the past ten days, we’ve made incredible progress clearing the queues caused by France’s restrictions. To keep traffic flowing, drivers must get tested and have their permits before heading to Kent. These new testing centres at service stations and businesses will help cut down delays.”
Testing Kits Free for Businesses Setting Up Centres
- The Department of Health and Social Care will supply free testing kits.
- Businesses can establish on-site testing to ensure trucks are “Covid ready” before departure.
- Military support will be on hand at 10 testing sites, providing rapid lateral flow tests with results in under an hour.
The Armed Forces have experience from mass testing operations in Liverpool, Merthyr Tydfil, and Medway. They’ll also advise drivers on new post-Brexit border rules and verify their documentation.
Thousands of Lorries Cleared, More Support on the Way
More than 25,500 lorries have crossed since France introduced tough Covid restrictions linked to the new virus variant.
Minister for the Armed Forces James Heappey praised the troops:
“The Armed Forces continue to demonstrate flexibility by redeploying to new testing sites, ensuring quicker access and minimal disruption at Dover and the Eurotunnel. They’re committed to keeping the country moving, healthy, and secure in 2021.”
