Six Hurt as Car Screams Into Crowd in Central Berlin
Chaos on Berlin Pavement: One Critically Injured
At least six people were injured, one critically, after a car mounted the pavement and ploughed into a crowd in central Berlin on Wednesday evening.
The vehicle, described as speeding out of control, crashed into pedestrians near a busy city hotspot just after 8pm local time. One victim was trapped underneath the car before being rescued and rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Mass Emergency Response Swarms Scene
The Berlin Fire Department raised the alarm under the “mass casualty incident” protocol. Over 60 firefighters, 22 emergency vehicles, and a rescue helicopter descended on the scene.
Police swiftly cordoned off the area amid heavy emergency services presence. Victims received urgent medical aid as investigators sealed off the streets and began gathering evidence.
Was It an Accident or Attack?
Police have not confirmed whether the crash was accidental or deliberate. The driver was arrested at the scene and is currently being questioned.
“We cannot confirm the motive at this time,” said a Berlin police spokesperson. “An investigation is underway, and we are examining all possibilities.”
Tensions Rise Amid Wave of Similar Attacks in Germany
This marks the third vehicle-ramming incident in Germany in recent weeks. Just two weeks ago, a car ploughed into crowds in Mannheim, killing two and injuring 14. In February, a mother and her toddler were killed in Munich in a suspected Islamist attack.
These events have sparked heated debate over public safety, terrorism threats, and the rising number of vehicle attacks across the country.
Investigation Ongoing: Authorities Urge Witnesses to Come Forward
Berlin police are appealing for witnesses and any video footage to help piece together how and why the car careened into the crowd.
Further details about the victims and the driver will be released as the probe continues. Anyone with information should contact Berlin police or local emergency hotlines.
