Two Nabbed in Major Chatham Theft Crackdown
Two alleged shoplifters have been charged following a high-impact crime crackdown in Chatham on Friday, March 28, 2025. The day-long operation targeted antisocial behaviour and theft across Medway, led by beat officers, PCSOs, and partner agencies.
Theft Spree Hits Medway Shops
Patrols scoured Chatham’s town centre businesses and nearby residential areas, checking compliance with trading laws and tenancy rules. The arrests took place on Chatham High Street, linked to a series of recent thefts around Medway.
- March 13: £140 worth of laundry products pinched from ASDA in Strood.
- March 14: Chocolates worth £250 stolen from the B&M store.
- March 27: £130 worth of chocolates swiped from Co-op in Walderslade.
Suspects Bailed After Theft Charges
Police named the accused as 38-year-old Samantha Lewis of Luton Road, Chatham, and 43-year-old Robert Downey from Downside, Rochester. Both face theft charges and have been released on bail. They must appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Friday, April 25.
Vape Shop Raided – Thousands of Illegal Items Seized
A joint raid with Trading Standards at a local vape shop uncovered a treasure trove of dodgy goods. Officers seized 3,500 canisters of nitrous oxide and 28 large evidence bags packed with suspected illegal vaping products.
Police Dog Dougal was also out on high visibility patrols in hotspots known for drug troubles and antisocial behaviour. At Chatham railway station, a knife arch was installed as a security measure. Alongside British Transport Police and Southeastern trains, officers cracked down on potential crime around the transport hub.
Other Police Actions and Warnings
A motorbike possibly riding without insurance was confiscated. Drivers involved in reckless antisocial behaviour were warned, sending a clear message that such activities won’t be tolerated.
