Lorry Plunges Into Gravesend Canal – Driver Rescued in Early Morning Drama
Massive Rescue Operation on Gravesend Canal
Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) sprang into action at 4.29am after reports of a serious crash involving a heavy goods vehicle. On arrival, firefighters found the lorry had smashed through the roadside and ended up submerged in a water-filled ditch or canal.
To tackle the tricky scene, six fire engines rolled up alongside two specialist water safety units. Crews battled challenging conditions using hydraulic cutters, rams, and swift water rescue gear to free the driver trapped inside the lorry.
Driver Rescued and Taken to Hospital
One person was pulled to safety and passed to South East Coast Ambulance Service (SECAmb) for urgent medical care. No details have been released about their condition yet.
Kent Police and local council officers quickly secured the area, which remained cordoned off throughout the rescue and recovery.
Fire Service Praises Teamwork in Tough Conditions
“Firefighters wearing drysuits and equipped with water safety tools worked in challenging conditions to access and remove the casualty. This was a coordinated multi-agency response to a very serious incident,” said a KFRS spokesperson.
Road Closures and Ongoing Recovery
Emergency crews stood down at around 7.13am, but 1 Way will stay partially shut for hours while the lorry is recovered and safety checks completed.
