Census 2021: The Big Count Hits England and Wales on March 21
The census is back! Every 10 years, this nationwide survey paints a detailed picture of who lives where across England and Wales. This year’s big day is Sunday, 21 March 2021.
Why Your Answers Matter
Your census answers help shape the future of public services. From transport to education and healthcare, councils and charities rely on census data to decide on funding and planning.
- bristol/" title="Bristol" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Bristol City Council used 2011 census data to fund local housing improvements.
- Redbridge Council for Voluntary Services helped ethnic minority groups learn about dementia, thanks to the census.
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has also used past data to track how coronavirus has impacted different communities. Census 2021 will provide fresh insights to make sure hospitals, schools, universities, and job centres meet today’s changing needs.
Safe, Digital-First Census
This year, the census is digital-first. You’ll be urged to fill it out online using any device, from your mobile phone to a tablet or computer.
Need help? The ONS offers support online, via phone, webchat, email, social media, and even text messages. They’re also encouraging you to get assistance from friends or family.
Where safe and permitted by government rules, Census Support Centres will open to offer face-to-face help with the online form.
Don’t Dodge It – Field Officers Will Visit
If you don’t complete the census by the deadline, field officers will visit your home late March to April to encourage you to take part. They won’t enter your property but will work like postal or delivery staff, wearing PPE and following government safety guidelines.
The census is vital for planning the services we all rely on. Make sure you’re counted on 21 March 2021!
