Elon Musk Holds the Reins but Bans Stay for Now
Elon Musk’s £38 billion Twitter takeover is official, but don’t expect banned users like Donald Trump to waltz back anytime soon. Musk made it clear that no major content moderation changes or account reinstatements will happen until a new “content moderation council” meets.
“To be super clear, we have not yet made any changes to Twitter’s content moderation policies,” Musk tweeted, dashing hopes of an immediate free-for-all on the platform.
The Content Moderation Council: Twitter’s New Gatekeepers
Musk says the incoming council will feature “widely diverse viewpoints” to carefully weigh decisions about reinstating accounts and managing content. Until then, banned users remain banned.
This stance dampens speculation that Musk will instantly scrap permanent suspensions on controversial figures. His earlier comments about ending lifelong bans sparked fears among online safety advocates and users wary of a no-rules Twitter.
“Different Game Modes” for Twitter?
Amid chatter about “PvP Twitter” – a battlefield for verified accounts to spar – Musk hinted he’s open to the idea. A Canadian right-wing researcher suggested separate modes: one for anonymous accounts with minimal policing and another more strictly moderated.
Musk simply replied: “Something like this makes sense,” but details remain vague.
What About Trump and Twitter’s Future?
Donald Trump praised Musk’s takeover on his own Truth Social. “Very happy Twitter is now in sane hands,” he said, though he dodged any hints about returning.
Meanwhile, London Mayor Sadiq Khan stressed caution: decisions to reinstate banned users “should be made incredibly carefully and in direct consultation with experts.”
With Twitter now private and delisted from the New York Stock Exchange, Musk faces pressure from wary users threatening to quit if content rules loosen. Yet he reassures advertisers he wants Twitter to be “a space where a wide range of beliefs can be debated in a healthy manner.”
