Heathfield Man Faces Justice After Brutal Attack Leaves Woman Seriously Injured
Brutal Assault Rocks Cross in Hand
On 15 July 2023, chaos erupted at a home in Cross in Hand, Heathfield, when William Bennett, 35, launched a savage punch at a woman, leaving her with a broken nose, damaged teeth, and severe facial injuries. The violent episode also wrecked property inside the victim’s home.
Bennett, from Heathfield Road, Five Ashes, was swiftly arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm.
Bennett Faces a String of Charges
Following a thorough investigation, Bennett was charged on 4 July 2024 with multiple offences:
- Three counts of assault
- Two counts of intentional strangulation
- Two counts of criminal damage
- One count of controlling and coercive behaviour
Though Bennett initially pleaded not guilty, he later admitted one count of criminal damage during the trial on 4 August. Ultimately, he was found guilty of causing actual bodily harm.
Suspended Sentence and Restraining Order at Hove Crown Court
On 10 October, Hove Crown Court delivered its verdict:
- 18-month prison sentence, suspended for two years
- 10-year restraining order to protect the victim
- Mandatory rehabilitation programmes
- £3,000 fine
Police Praise Investigation and Support for Victim
“No one should ever have to experience violence. Together we worked diligently to gather evidence, secure charges, and bring the case before the court while providing ongoing support to the victim throughout,” said PC Caden Miles, leading the investigation.
“We welcome the positive outcome and hope it brings the victim a sense of closure. We are committed to investigating every report of violence with diligence and determination, supporting victims and holding offenders to account wherever possible.”
