The Metropolitan Police have stepped in to lead the manhunt for Hadush Kebatu, who was mistakenly released from HMP Chelmsford yesterday morning.

Manhunt Intensifies After Kebatu Flees

Essex Police initially led the search after Kebatu was seen boarding a London-bound train at Chelmsford Station at 12:41pm on Friday.

After extensive inquiries, officers strongly believe Kebatu remains in the London area. This prompted the Met to take full control of the operation shortly after 11:30am today.

Met’s Top Team on High Alert

Commander James Conway said: “Finding Hadush Kebatu is a top priority. The hunt is now headed by a Senior Investigating Officer with backing from the Specialist Crime Command, experts in tracking down fugitives.”

“We confirmed Kebatu got off the train at Stratford station. CCTV footage across the transport network is being reviewed to track his movements.”

“We won’t provide a running commentary to avoid compromising the hunt, but urge anyone who spots him to call 999 immediately.”

Public Help Urgently Needed

  • Hadush Kebatu escaped due to an error at HMP Chelmsford.
  • Last seen leaving a train at Stratford station.
  • Met Police now lead the search, focusing on London transport links.
  • Police advise public to report sightings to 999 without delay.
