Norwegian Cruise Line has officially called off the search for a crew member who went overboard from the Norwegian Viva. The 38-year-old chef, Vinshar from Kozhikode, India, vanished during a 7-night Western Caribbean cruise near Costa Maya, Mexico.

Man Overboard Alert Sparks Immediate Rescue Efforts

The alarm was raised on April 9 after Vinshar was reported missing. The cruise ship quickly turned back and launched a full-scale search, alerting the Mexican Rescue Coordination Centre. Norwegian Viva stayed in the area for around two hours before being given the all-clear to continue the journey. Despite coordinated efforts involving local authorities and nearby vessels, no trace of the missing chef was found. The search was officially suspended on April 11.

Last Seen on Deck 8, Concerns Raised After Missing Work Shift

Sources say Vinshar was last spotted on Deck 8 near the Bistro, where he was assigned, around 3:45 pm—about two hours after the ship left Costa Maya. He was working in the galley and was not reported missing until he failed to show up for his 5 pm shift. A thorough onboard search, including his cabin, was conducted, but CCTV footage later confirmed a man overboard incident. The exact circumstances remain under investigation.

Family Speaks Out as Cruise Line Contacts Wife

Vinshar’s family was informed of the disappearance by the cruise line at 8 pm on Friday. His brother revealed that Vinshar had been working on NCL ships for six years and was recently transferred to Norwegian Viva in December. The brother added that Vinshar had faced difficulties at his new post and had already booked a ticket home for April 16, signalling he did not want to continue on the ship.
