A seven-race fixture at Brighton Racecourse has been scrapped after wildlife tore up the turf, leaving the track unsafe for racing. The card, due to kick off the 2026 season on Saturday 18 April, was abandoned following damage caused by badgers and birds feeding on leatherjackets – the larvae of crane flies.
Wildlife Turns Turf Into No-Go Zone
Despite ground staff tackling the leatherjacket infestation early and attempts to protect the course by shifting running rails and limiting field sizes, overnight damage worsened. Badgers and birds had dug up patches of the track that couldn’t be avoided during racing, forcing officials to act.
Safety First As Meeting Gets Thrown Out
The decision to cancel was made on safety grounds, backed by a British Horseracing Authority course inspector. Brighton Racecourse officials expressed their “bitter disappointment” after their efforts to save the fixture failed and apologised for the disruption.
Repairs Underway – Ticket Holders to Be Contacted
Work is already in progress to fix the track before the next scheduled meetings on Tuesday, 28 and Wednesday, 29 April. Those who booked tickets, hospitality, or restaurant packages will be contacted with options for refunds or transfers to other race days.
