A major house fire is being reported on Mount Pleasant Road in New Malden, with residents saying people have been moved away from the area amid concerns over a possible gas explosion.
Pictures shared from the scene on Saturday evening show flames and a substantial plume of smoke rising from a property on the residential road.
Several residents posting in the New Malden Neighbourhood Facebook group described the incident as a “bad house fire”, while one witness said people nearby had been told to leave the area because of concerns about a potential gas explosion.
Another local resident reported that the property was still on fire when they checked the scene.
Smoke from the blaze was reportedly visible from as far away as Chessington.

There is currently no confirmed information about casualties or injuries, and the exact circumstances surrounding the outbreak of the fire have not yet been established.
The claims concerning a possible gas risk have also not yet been confirmed by the emergency services.
Residents have suggested the incident is centred on a property in the Mount Pleasant Road area, although UKNIP is not publishing an unverified house number at this stage.

A previous fire on Mount Pleasant Road saw six fire engines and around 40 firefighters sent to the area, with residents evacuated and significant damage caused to a semi-detached house, but it has not yet been established whether Saturday evening’s incident involves the same property.
Emergency services are understood to be at the scene.
This is a developing incident. More information will be published as it becomes available.
