Hero Police Officers Deliver Baby on Canterbury Roadside
Kent Police dog handler PC Ed Goldswain was driving through Canterbury on the afternoon of Monday, 23 October 2023 when he spotted a man by the roadside near the Kingsmead Road roundabout.
Stopping to offer help, PC Goldswain quickly realised the man’s partner was in labour inside a nearby car — and there was no time to get her to hospital.
Quick-Thinking Cops Join Forces to Assist Birth
After alerting colleagues via the police system, Local Policing Team’s PC Billy Knight and police medic PC Rachael Taylor rushed to the scene.
They helped the woman deliver a healthy baby girl before an ambulance arrived. The new family were then taken to a local hospital, where all were confirmed well and later released to enjoy life at home.
Chief Inspector Praises Officers’ Calm Under Pressure
“Police officers can be called at a moment’s notice to any sort of emergency or incident,” said Chief Inspector Gary Woodward.
“This may have been an out-of-the-ordinary call for those PCs responding, but I’m proud their training and professionalism helped this couple.”
“I wish the mother, father and baby well and hope they’re enjoying family life together.”
