A34 Shut Both Ways After Serious Crash Near East Ilsley

The A34 is shut in both directions this afternoon after a serious collision near East Ilsley. The smash has brought traffic to a standstill and prompted a major emergency response.

Road Closures and Air Ambulance Called

The closure stretches from the A339 Vodafone roundabout at Newbury northbound. Southbound traffic is being diverted off the A34 at East Ilsley and Compton. The Thames Valley Air Ambulance landed on the carriageway to assist.

This crash follows an earlier caravan collision cleared by police but now the situation has worsened. Rural diversion routes through villages are clogged, causing frustrating delays.

Long Delays Expected – Police Urge Patience

Police warn the southbound carriageway could remain closed for several hours. They are working to ease congestion at the back of the queues.

As of 6.30pm, the A34 northbound between the A4 (Speen) and A1485 (Chiltern) remains shut for a full investigation by Thames Valley Police. The closure extends further due to unrelated weekend roadworks.

How to Navigate the Diversions

  • Northbound: Exit the A34 at Speen and take the A4 westbound.
  • At Hungerford, turn right onto the A338 northbound towards M4 J14.
  • Join the M4 motorway at junction 14.
  • To return to the A34 northbound, continue north on the A338 to Wantage.
  • Turn right onto the A417 eastbound to Rowstock roundabout.
  • Turn left on the A4130 towards Didcot to rejoin the A34 at Milton.

Motorists are advised to follow diversion signs and expect delays across the area.
