Family's Eurostar Trip Soured Over Sikh Kirpan Clash

A family’s return from Paris to Bedfordshire sparked outrage after Eurostar staff challenged their right to carry kirpans—traditional Sikh ceremonial blades—fueling claims of discrimination and insensitivity.

Kirpan Controversy Sparks Tensions at Eurostar Terminal

Karen Kaur, an initiated Sikh, recalled a heated standoff at the Eurostar gate. Though her family had travelled before with their kirpans without issue, this time staff insisted the blades be placed in security trays, labelling them as security threats.

“The staff were aggressive,” Mrs Kaur said. “My young son was scared.” The drama only eased when a manager stepped in, upgraded them to first class, and allowed them to board.

Kirpans: Faith vs. Security Rules

The kirpan is a sacred article of faith for initiated Sikhs, symbolising justice and protection. Mrs Kaur stressed the blades are legal in the UK and have been accepted in international aviation since 2010. She had expected no problems with Eurostar.

Sikh Federation Calls for Eurostar Boycott

Dabinderjit Singh, principal advisor to the Sikh Federation (UK), slammed Eurostar’s blade policy. They ban non-retractable blades but allow tiny retractable ones under 75mm—a move he says blatantly discriminates against Sikhs, who must wear kirpans at all times.

“We urge the public to boycott Eurostar until they scrap this discriminatory policy,” Singh demanded.

Eurostar Responds, Apologises for Poor Handling

Eurostar blamed security rules set by the Joint Security Committee of the four countries they operate in, requiring bans on non-retractable blades like kirpans.

The company apologised for the way staff communicated with Mrs Kaur and admitted to customer service failings.

This row has ignited wider debate over security measures clashing with religious freedoms in international travel.
