ISIS ‘Sleeper Agent’ Nabbed Ahead of Euro 2024 Showdown
A suspected Islamic State sleeper agent has been arrested in Germany’s Baden-Wurttemberg just hours after security chiefs warned of terror threats during Euro 2024.
Mahmoud A., an Iraqi national, was detained in Esslingen near Stuttgart on suspicion of plotting a terrorist attack for ISIS. Investigators revealed he arrived in Germany in October 2022 but had ISIS links dating back to 2016. How he slipped into the country remains a mystery.
Interior Minister Nancy Faeser said: “Our security authorities are extremely vigilant, follow every tip-off, and strike hard to protect our country.”
Security Tightens as Euro 2024 Kicks Off
The arrest came mere hours before Germany’s Euro 2024 clash with Hungary in Stuttgart. Thomas Haldenwang, boss of domestic intelligence agency BfV, issued a stark warning of rising terror risks fueled by anger in Arab nations after Berlin’s backing of Israel following the Hamas attacks in October.
He singled out extremist groups and “radicalised lone wolves” as major threats. Police leave has been cancelled nationwide. A massive 22,000 officers now patrol borders, railways, and airports to keep the tournament safe.
Violence Sparks Security Surge
Recent attacks have rattled Germany:
- A German cop was fatally stabbed by an Afghan knifeman at an anti-Islam rally in Mannheim.
- Police shot dead an Afghan attacker who killed one and injured three at a Euro 2024 viewing party in Wolmirstedt.
- In Hamburg, officers shot an axe-wielding man carrying a Molotov cocktail at a fan zone.
Despite tight controls, security was breached at Munich’s Allianz Arena just before the tournament opener, when a German YouTuber managed to get onto the pitch.
Border Checks, Overseas Help, and Public Vigilance
Strict border checks will continue until mid-July following the arrest of another suspected Islamist at Cologne-Bonn airport last week. Soufian T was caught after applying for a security job at Euro events, raising more alarm bells.
Berlin has called in officers from overseas and urged the public to stay alert. With 2.7 million fans expected in stadiums and millions more watching public events, the stakes have never been higher.
Political Fallout and Rising Extremism
Officials revealed a spike in politically motivated crimes in 2023:
- 60,028 offences, up from 58,916 the year before.
- Right-wing extremist crimes rose by 22.4% to 25,660 incidents.
- Anti-Semitic attacks jumped from 33 to 492, mostly after October 7.
Faeser stressed that global conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, alongside foreign espionage and cyber threats from Russia, China, and Iran, are fuelling tensions.
Final Whistle: Germany on High Alert
The arrest of the alleged ISIS agent near Stuttgart is a stark reminder of the terror threat shadowing Euro 2024. Authorities are doubling down on security and calling on the public to stay vigilant as the tournament unfolds.
