Thousands die or suffer serious injuries on UK roads every year—often from avoidable mistakes. Now, South Yorkshire Police (SYP) and Highways England are cracking down hard on dodgy commercial drivers.
High-Tech Sting Targets Rogue Truckers
SYP recently got their hands on an unmarked HGV tractor unit from Highways England. This clever rig lets cops peer inside tall vehicles like lorries and LGVs to catch dangerous drivers red-handed.
Last week (15-19 March), SYP, one of only two forces in the country with this kit, used it alongside dedicated stop sites to make sure commercial drivers stick to road laws.
Heavy Loads, Deadly Risks
“Those using vehicles for commercial purposes have laws that they must follow for everyone’s safety,” said Roads Policing Sergeant Bruce Yacomeni. “Weight restrictions exist for a reason. Overweight trucks can wreck braking distances and handling in an emergency.”
He added: “Driving hour limits and load safety rules protect both drivers and other road users. Drivers nodding off or slow to react are ticking time bombs.”
Shocking Results from the Operation
- 150 vehicles stopped
- 120 offences recorded
- Some lorries up to 43% overweight – including recovery trucks
- Dangerous vehicles found with cracked windscreens and insecure bonnets
- Drivers skipping tachograph logging (tracking driving hours)
- 48 caught not wearing seat belts
- 18 caught using mobile phones behind the wheel
- 12 found not in proper control of their vehicles
Sgt Yacomeni warned: “We keep saying it but it’s true—simple rules save lives. Buckle up, put your phone away, don’t speed, and follow your vehicle’s laws.”
Ongoing Crackdown and Training
SYP’s Roads Policing Team is beefing up skills with training on dangerous goods transport and vehicle inspections. Officers patrol round-the-clock across South Yorkshire, poised to clamp down on risky drivers.
Sarah Watson-Quirk, Highways England’s Regional Road Safety Coordinator, said: “Most people drive responsibly. Ops like Tramline remind everyone to stay safe. Our special lorry cabs help police enforce the law effectively.”
She added: “Around 450 people are killed or seriously injured each year on England’s major roads due to impaired or distracted driving. Last week’s operation reached 150 drivers with important safety messages to make our roads safer.”
