In 2023, Amy Dowden was living her dream as a professional dancer on “Strictly Come Dancing.” She had recently married the love of her life and was hopeful about starting a family. Despite the devastating diagnosis, Amy made a courageous decision. Just six days after learning about her condition, she allowed cameras to follow her experiences, capturing every moment of her journey. From surgery to chemotherapy, fertility treatments, and uncertainty, Amy faced it all head-on. Over 15 months, the film documented the difficult times, tough decisions, and moments of triumph, including the Strictly family finding a way to include her in the pro dance during the Final.
Throughout this raw and deeply personal film, Amy navigated the most turbulent year of her life. Her battle for health, her dreams of a future family, and her unwavering passion for dance were all at stake. By sharing her story openly, Amy hoped that something positive could emerge from such a devastating experience—one that impacts countless lives.
Amy Dowden, who has been confirmed to return as a Professional Dancer on Strictly in 2024, reflected on her journey: “A year ago, I was recently married and about to go on my honeymoon. It was an exciting new chapter in my life but finding a lump on my breast changed everything. I never thought at my age I would get cancer, and despite having family members and friends who were cancer survivors, I had no idea of the impact it would have on my life. This journey has taught me so much about myself, and I hope others find hope and strength from this film, encouraging everyone to check themselves, regardless of age.”
Nick Andrews, BBC Cymru Wales’ Head of Commissioning, praised Amy’s courage and resilience: “To allow cameras to follow her deeply personal experience in the hope of something positive emerging from such a difficult time is nothing short of extraordinary. This film is truly inspiring.”
Paul Islwyn Thomas, CEO of Wildflame Productions, expressed gratitude to Amy, her family, and friends for allowing the team to be part of her challenging journey. Without Amy’s openness, they wouldn’t have been able to create this impactful film.
Don’t miss this powerful and inspiring film, airing on BBC One, BBC One Wales, and iPlayer this summer.
