Stolen Toys Rescue Mission: Police Deliver Unclaimed Loot to Sick Kids
A van packed with unclaimed and stolen toys has found a new purpose – bringing festive cheer to children at Nottingham’s Queen’s Medical Centre Children’s Unit.
From Crime to Christmas Joy
The haul included brand new games, scooters, arts and crafts, and dolls. These toys had sat gathering dust for months, some even years, after police seized them in raids, shoplifting busts, or found abandoned. With no owners coming forward, the force decided to turn them into Christmas gifts for youngsters stuck in hospital away from their families.
Cleaning, Wrapping, and Spreading Smiles
Officers, led by Kev Vowles and his Historic Exhibit Review Team, cleaned and disinfected every item before loading them up for delivery on 14 December. The hospital staff will now wrap the gifts and distribute them in stockings, ensuring no child misses out on a festive treat.
“Investigations are complete and the toys just lay gathering dust. No child should go without this Christmas. If we can bring a smile to their faces, we will,” said Kev Vowles.
Clearing Space and Doing Good
The move also helps clear space at police stations where unclaimed goods pile up. Nottinghamshire Police regularly donate unclaimed clothing, electrical items, and toys to local charities. But this direct handover to hospitalised kids feels especially rewarding.
“Putting confiscated items to better use lifts spirits all around,” Kev added. “If it helps sick children enjoy a brighter Christmas, that’s enough for us.”
