Transgender Man Dies After Brutal Attack at German Pride Parade

A shocking act of violence at a Gay Pride event in Münster, Germany, has left the LGBTQ+ community reeling. Transgender man Malte C. tragically died after being viciously assaulted during the Christopher Street Day parade last August.

20-Year-Old Sentenced for Fatal Assault

The Münster regional court found a 20-year-old defendant guilty of causing Malte C.’s death through bodily harm. The attacker was handed a five-year youth custody sentence.

The violent encounter unfolded when the defendant sexually harassed three women at the parade. After they rejected him, he hurled homophobic slurs and threatened violence. Malte C. stepped in, asking the assailant to back off.

“The defendant responded with a brutal attack, punching Malte repeatedly in the chest and face,” the court heard. Malte fell unconscious and later died in hospital, despite being placed in an induced coma.

Outrage and Calls for Hate Crime Classification

The incident sparked international outrage among LGBTQ+ activists. The Lesbian and Gay Federation in Germany (LSVD) demanded the court recognise the crime as motivated by homophobia and transphobia. However, the court rejected classifying the attack as a hate crime, despite the hateful language used.

Addiction and Mental Health in the Defendant’s Defense

During sentencing, the defense highlighted the defendant’s drug and alcohol addiction and mental instability. They pushed for a juvenile sentence focused on rehabilitation and therapy to tackle the addictions.

The prosecution warned of the risk of future offences but agreed that therapy and psychotherapeutic support could help reduce reoffending. The court balanced the severity of the attack with rehabilitation needs, sentencing him to five years in custody along with placement in a facility for addicted offenders.
