Firefighters Race to Blaze Caused by Neglected Candle
Two fire engines and crews in breathing apparatus swooped in to douse flames with hose reel jets. Thanks to a working smoke alarm, residents escaped the blaze unharmed.
Candle Left Too Close to Paper Sparks Fire
The Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) volunteer team assisted victims on scene and offered vital fire safety advice. The fire likely started when a candle was left too close to paper, which caught light. A sofa suffered minor damage while smoke ruined the rest of the room.
Firefighters Issue Urgent Candle Safety Warnings
- Always use candle holders on non-flammable surfaces.
- Never leave candles unattended, especially around kids and pets.
- Keep candles away from curtains, bedding, clothes, plants, or anything flammable.
- Never place lit candles on windowsills or floors.
- Extinguish all candles before going to bed.
- Avoid draughts or placing candles where they might be knocked over.
And remember: install a smoke alarm on every floor and test it weekly!
