A man who fatally stabbed his mother outside their home in Burbage has been sentenced to a hybrid order after pleading guilty to manslaughter on the basis of diminished responsibility. Gregor Bauld, 23, received his sentence today (Friday, 8 November) at Leicester Crown Court for the death of his mother, Christine Bauld, in March 2024.
The incident occurred on the morning of 3 March, when East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) was called to The Coppice following reports of a woman in cardiac arrest. Despite the best efforts of emergency responders and bystanders who assisted at the scene, 55-year-old Christine Bauld succumbed to multiple stab wounds.
CCTV footage and witness statements confirmed that Gregor Bauld attacked his mother outside their home. Bauld was arrested at the scene and initially charged with murder. However, following a three-week trial, the jury acquitted him of murder, and he pleaded guilty to manslaughter due to diminished responsibility.
Today, Bauld was sentenced to a hybrid order under Section 45A of the Mental Health Act. He will initially receive treatment in a hospital, and once deemed stable, will serve a minimum prison term of 13 years and 8 months.
Detective Inspector Mark Parish of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit’s Murder Investigation Team commented on the case: “This was a horrific incident with tragic consequences, leaving a family devastated. Gregor was suffering from mental health issues at the time, and his family has shown immense bravery throughout the investigation and trial.”
Parish extended his thanks to the witnesses who provided support at the scene and statements for the investigation, saying, “We appreciate your courage and cooperation as we sought justice and answers for Mrs. Bauld’s family.”
