McDonald’s Hit by Major IT Outage, Customers Left Unable to Order

McDonald’s, the globally recognized fast-food chain, has faced a significant setback as a major IT outage affected its operations, resulting in the closure of several restaurants and rendering customers unable to place orders, including in the UK.

Reports of IT issues and difficulties with the McDonald’s app have surfaced worldwide, with problems extending to the UK, particularly this morning (Friday, March 15).

Downdetector, a platform that monitors service outages, has seen numerous reports of problems with the McDonald’s app and website.

Concerns escalated when individuals on Downdetector highlighted the widespread impact, with one user noting, “All Maccies in UK inc Ireland down,” while another emphasized, “Mcdonald’s reporting national outages in the United States, UK, and Australia, some places are shut down unable to take orders!

Social media platforms have also been inundated with posts from customers sharing their experiences of McDonald’s store closures due to the outage.

One user shared a photo on X (formerly Twitter) of a closed McDonald’s outlet with a sign on the door indicating, “We cannot take any orders, our systems are down. This is a national issue atm. Sorry for the inconvenience.”

Expressing disappointment, another individual on X remarked, “Unfortunate news for McDonald’s fans! Technical glitches cause major outage, disabling orders.

Responding to the situation, McDonald’s Australia acknowledged the technology outage impacting its restaurants nationwide and assured customers that efforts were underway to resolve the issue promptly, expressing apologies for any inconvenience caused.

Meanwhile, the official McDonald’s Japan X account confirmed its stores’ experience of a ‘system failure,’ urging customers to be patient until service restoration.

In a reassuring development, McDonald’s has issued a statement confirming the resolution of the “technology outage” in the UK and Ireland, expressing gratitude to customers for their patience and extending apologies for any inconvenience encountered.

A spokesperson for McDonald’s stated, “We are aware of a technology outage which impacted our restaurants. The issue has now been resolved in the UK and Ireland. We thank customers for their patience and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. The issue is not related to a cybersecurity event.”

As McDonald’s works to resume normal operations following the outage, customers are encouraged to monitor official announcements and updates from the company.

For those curious about service disruptions across various platforms, Downdetector serves as a valuable resource, allowing users to report and track issues with popular services such as Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Virgin Media, and more. The platform highlights incidents when the volume of problem reports significantly surpasses the typical volume for that time of day.
