40 Years On, Woman Bravely Revisits Horrific Rape to Nab Attacker
A fearless woman, known only as Liz, has stepped forward to relive a brutal rape she endured four decades ago as a student. Her brave move aims to finally bring her attacker to justice and stop him from harming others.
Terrifying Attack on Warwick Campus Footpath
Liz, then a 20-year-old law student, was walking to the library near Warwick University in Canley around 6pm one Monday. Suddenly, a man grabbed her from behind, pressing a knife to her throat and threatening to kill her if she screamed. Paralyzed by fear, Liz was forced through a gate onto a dark football pitch where the assault unfolded.
Though she never saw his face, Liz described him as a man in his 20s with no clear accent. From his words, she feared he’d committed similar attacks before.
Decades-Old DNA Hope for Justice
Shaken and alone after the attack, Liz ran to safety and raised the alarm. Her rapist, however, was never caught. Crucially, forensic samples taken at the time remain preserved, long before DNA testing was an option.
Now, detectives are submitting those decades-old samples to modern DNA labs, hoping for a match in today’s extensive databases. The investigation team is urging anyone with information—even the smallest detail—from that time to come forward.
“I Want Him to Feel Scared”
“I would like to feel that effort has been made to find him,” Liz said. “I would like him to feel scared because he frightened me for a long time.”
To mark the 40th anniversary on January 9, 2024, Liz even traced her original route despite the university’s changed landscape, including the missing football pitch.
Detective Inspector Rachel Gregory of the Public Protection Unit stressed the importance of pursuing such offenders. “A rapist is a rapist. They need to know they will be pursued—lawfully but relentlessly—by West Midlands Police,” she said.
