Deadly Bus Blast Rocks Burkina Faso
A bus en route from Fada N’Gourma to the Niger border hit a landmine near Bougui village on Sunday afternoon, killing and injuring passengers, officials revealed.
Explosive Attack Amid Rising Terror Threats
The bus was making its way from the market town of Fada N’Gourma, 220km east of capital Ouagadougou, towards Kantchari when disaster struck. “The vehicle hit a mine,” confirmed Colonel Hubert Yameogo, regional governor.
Injured victims were rushed to the hospital in Fada N’Gourma, but many passengers vanished after the blast, Yameogo added. Authorities are scrambling to track down the missing amid a government crackdown to restore security.
Al-Qaeda and ISIL Hideouts Spark Deadly Strife
No group has claimed responsibility, but the deadly blast hit an area plagued by militants tied to al-Qaeda in North Africa and ISIL.
For over six years, Burkina Faso has been battered by jihadist violence, killing thousands and forcing nearly two million people from their homes. The ongoing security crisis has sparked two coups this year, with military leaders vowing to clamp down on terror.
