Tesco Dims Lights and Turns Down Noise for New ‘Quiet Hours’

Tesco is rolling out quiet hours in all its larger stores every Wednesday and Saturday from 9am to 10am. After a successful trial, the supermarket giant confirmed shoppers can expect dimmed lights and lowered checkout noise during these slots.

Calmer Shopping for Those Who Need It

The move aims to create a more accessible and less stressful shopping experience for customers sensitive to loud sounds, bright lights, and busy crowds. Tesco said, “Our stores can be overwhelming for some customers due to noise, lights and smells.

They added, “A calmer environment helps elderly shoppers, those with young children, and customers struggling with mental health challenges.”

Tesco Targets Noise from Self-Service Tills Next

With around 3,400 UK stores, Tesco also plans to reduce noise from self-service checkouts and Scan As You Shop devices going forward, making the experience even more peaceful.

Claire Pickthall, Group Customer Proposition Director, said, “Almost 20% of the UK population have a disability, and we want to support them as much as we can.

She added, “Shopping can be stressful for many, not just those with disabilities. Tesco wants everyone to feel welcome and have a calm place to shop.”
