A 60-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of manslaughter following the deaths of three residents at Gainsborough Care Home in Swanage has been released under investigation. Dorset Police continue to treat the deaths of the two men, aged 74 and 91, and an 86-year-old woman as unexplained. The families of the victims are being kept informed as enquiries progress.

The emergency services were called to the care home on Ulwell Road at 7:16 am on Wednesday, 23 October 2024, after the bodies of the three residents were discovered. Seven other residents were taken to hospital as a precaution; they are not in serious condition.

Other residents from the care home have been evacuated to an alternative location where they are receiving appropriate care, with support from Dorset Council and local health services.

Detectives are currently investigating the possibility of carbon monoxide poisoning as the primary line of enquiry but have confirmed that there is no wider risk to the community.

Detective Chief Inspector Neil Third of the Major Crime Investigation Team stated, “The thoughts of the investigation team and wider force remain with the loved ones of those who tragically died. We are continuing to gather as much information as possible to give us a full picture of events during the morning of Wednesday, 23 October 2024. This involves liaising with experts from partner agencies to understand the circumstances, and this work will take some time.”

DCI Third added, “Members of the public can expect to see a large multi-agency presence continue in the area over the coming days to enable us to conduct detailed enquiries. Our local officers will remain in the area to provide support. This tragic incident will have a significant impact on the community in Swanage, and we commend the care, compassion, and respect shown so far.”

The woman’s arrest was made to establish whether any actions or omissions that could be considered grossly negligent occurred. Enquiries are ongoing.
