Obsessed and Violent Ex Jailed for Torturing Girlfriend
Victoria O’Doherty’s short-lived relationship with Mario Sassano turned into a nightmare. In just a few months, Sassano’s jealousy spiralled into dangerous obsession and violence. He accused Victoria of cheating, even threatening her ex-partner after contacting him.
Horrific Abuse Behind Closed Doors
Sassano stalked Victoria relentlessly, checking her phone and tracking her every move. He alienated her from family and friends. Fueled by baseless jealousy, he engineered fights and on one terrifying occasion, dragged Victoria by her hair, sat on her chest, and strangled her with his dressing gown belt. Victoria struggled to breathe and feared for her life. Sassano later apologised and begged for forgiveness.
Manipulated by Tragedy and Threats
Sassano exploited a painful past – losing a girlfriend in a 2015 drowning – to justify his controlling ways. He threatened suicide if Victoria left, blaming her for his potential death. Despite the abuse, he bombarded her with attention, insisting they were all each other needed.
She Fought Back and Told Police
Victoria tried to break free in January 2021, but Sassano would not let go. He harassed her with emails and uninvited visits, once pulling her from her car by her hair before bizarrely proposing marriage. When he tried bribing her with £10,000 to keep quiet about the assaults, Victoria refused and handed the money back. She courageously reported the abuse.
“No other woman should ever have to suffer such horrendous, horrific abuse. Perpetrators isolate you, making you feel alone. You are never alone,” Victoria said.
“If you can find the courage, reach out and don’t be afraid to use Claire’s Law. It could save you from going through what I did.”
Sassano Sentenced for Assault and Coercive Control
In January, the 43-year-old from Birmingham admitted two counts of assault and controlling behaviour. He was jailed for five years — three years for assaults (served concurrently) and two years consecutively for coercive control, plus time served on remand.
Police Staff Investigator Kathryn Burns praised Victoria’s bravery. “No woman should endure the abuse Sassano inflicted. He has a history of similar offences. I’m glad he is behind bars protecting others now.”
She added the police work closely with charities to support victims through the legal process and beyond, urging victims to trust the system and seek help.
