Speeding Driver Jailed for Killing Man on Busy A13
Mohammed Ali, 21, from Barnet Grove, East London, was slammed with a five years and seven months prison sentence at Woolwich Crown Court on Tuesday. He also received a 57-and-a-half-month driving ban after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving and driving uninsured.
Man Dies After Horrific Crash on A13
- Victim: Kenneth Berry, 54, from Woolwich
- Incident Date: 20 March 2018, 9:50am
- Location: A13 eastbound, Rainham
Mr Berry had pulled his Vauxhall Astra onto the hard shoulder to clear debris when Ali, then just 18, blasted past in a blue BMW 335D. Witnesses said Ali’s car was doing over 100mph, weaving through traffic dangerously.
Trying to overtake one vehicle, Ali was blocked and attempted to pass on the inside. His BMW darted erratically between lanes before losing control and smashing into Mr Berry’s stationary car. Mr Berry, just stepping out, was fatally hit and died at the scene.
Met Police Praise Witnesses for Crucial Evidence
Ali was arrested with a passenger, also 18, who was later released without charge. The investigation was led by the Met’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit.
“Ali’s speed and dangerous manoeuvring that morning led directly to Mr Berry’s death. This is a busy road and all who were using it that day were put at risk,” said Detective Inspector Jose-Paulo Qureshi.
“Mr Berry has paid for Ali’s stupidity with his life. I am glad Ali will now face the consequences.”
