Driving Instructor Busted for Cannabis While Teaching Teen to Drive
A driving instructor was arrested after testing positive for cannabis during a lesson with a 17-year-old pupil in Slough, Berkshire. Thames Valley Police stopped the white driving school car following a tip-off that the instructor was high behind the wheel.
Shock Discovery During Routine Stop
Officers pulled over the vehicle and asked the instructor to take a roadside drug test. The results confirmed he was under the influence of cannabis while the learner was driving.
We stopped the vehicle in Slough, which at the time was being driven by a 17-year-old student, and shockingly the driving instructor tested positive for cannabis,” Thames Valley Police said in a social media statement.
Investigation Underway – Authorities Informed
The instructor was arrested on suspicion of drug-driving and later released under investigation as blood test results are awaited. Due to his profession, police have notified all relevant authorities to protect pupils’ safety.
If convicted, driving instructors face tough penalties—including up to a four-year ban from teaching after a drug or alcohol offence.
Not the First Time: Past Drug-Driving Instructors Caught
- In 2017, a female instructor was banned from driving for 18 months after testing positive for drugs.
- In Surrey in 2015, both a learner and their instructor were caught with drugs in their systems, with the instructor four times over the limit.
- Another instructor failed a roadside drug test in 2018 while with a student.
Driving instructors must undergo rigorous training to qualify. Being caught drug-driving usually disqualifies them from being deemed “fit and proper” to teach.
